What are Camera Filters?
Camera filters are optical elements that alter the properties of light entering the camera lens for improving the image captured. Camera filters can affect contrast, sharpness, brightness, colour and light intensity, individually, or in combinations. Camera filters are also used for creating special effects too.
There are variations and applications with camera filters. These filters behave in a predictable way when the properties of filters are clearly understood and experienced. These properties are related to filter use in both film and video imaging technique. In most successful applications, camera filters effect the blend with the image and helps to get the message across. Combined with all the other elements in image-making, camera filters enable to make visual statement that can manipulate emotions and thought to give good pictures.
Filter effects is always a part of video or image production. The filter selection should always be a part of the preplanning stage so as to avoid the last minute problems. You can also test the filters for the effects they produce.
Majority of camera filters absorb light that must be compensated for while calculating the light exposure. This can be compensated with either a “filter factor” or a “stop value”. Filter factors are nothing but multiples of unfiltered light exposure. Stop values are fitted to the set when there is no filter. Before attempting on any video or image shot it is recommended to make a preconditioned reading with your camera filters.
